Mission
The Zonta Club of Marathon is an organization of business and professional women dedicated to improving the circumstances of women at all stages of life, locally and globally.
History
Founded in 1919, Zonta International is a global organization of executives and professionals working together to advance the status of women worldwide through service and advocacy. With more than 30,000 members belonging to more than 1,200 Zonta Clubs in 63 countries and geographic areas, Zonta International is divided into 32 Districts, of which we are District 11.
Zonta takes its name from the Lakota Sioux Indian word meaning “honest and trustworthy”. Zonta has a long and well-respected history of being a worldwide service organization of executives in business and professions working together to advance the status of women. One of the first service organizations to understand women’s unique role in achieving world peace, Zonta International continues to promote justice and universal respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms.
Zonta International is divided into 31 districts worldwide. We are in District 11, which has 41 clubs throughout Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, the Bahamas, Puerto Rico, and the British Virgin Islands.
The clubs of District 11 select, fund, and participate in community projects fundamental to promoting women’s economic self-sufficiency, political equality, access to education and health care, and the elimination of violence against women.
The Club was chartered in 1990 with 21 members and now boasts nearly 50 members in the Middle Keys. In 1997, the Zonta Club of Marathon became the youngest club to receive the prestigious Governor’s Cup for outstanding achievement within the District.
Scholarship Programs include Adult Women Scholarships, Amelia Earhart Fellowship Awards, Leadership Monroe, Tech Prep Award, Young Women in Public Affairs, and Z-Club Award.
